Tough Caregivers: Obstacle or Opportunity? An Introduction to Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

Working with individuals struggling with mental health issues is unique, rewarding and incredibly demanding. Given this intensity, it can feel overwhelming to also tackle the involvement of loved ones, especially if they present as highly anxious or overly critical. Regardless of your training, discipline or experience, these sticky situations are likely to trigger an emotional response even for the most seasoned providers. Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) offers a language to help providers and teams explore these normal, expected, but sometimes problematic responses to triggering clinical demands.

This presentation will offer an experiential introduction to EFFT Clinician Blocks with the goal of  bringing more insight and empathy into your work with Parents, Caregivers and Loved ones and offering an approachable language to use when discussing clinical struggles with peers, colleagues and supervisors.

About the Presenter:

Bryn Miller

Bryn Miller is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Colorado, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Consultant (CEDS-C) and a Certified Advanced Therapist in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT). She is also on the Advisory Board of The Colorado Eating Disorder Professionals group (COPro) and supports parents and caregivers through volunteer work with non-profit The Eating Disorder Foundation.

With nearly a decade working with adolescents and young adults with mental health issues alongside their parents and caregivers, Bryn is passionate about supporting both individuals and their support systems. Bryn approaches her work, both with individuals and their loved ones, with the goal of whole family healing.

In service of the mission to better support parents and caregivers, and inspired by EFFT, Bryn founded Bryn Miller Parent Coaching and developed her signature 5-Step Parent Coaching Program, The Response Roadmap. Through live virtual groups and her on-demand course, Bryn empowers parents to get calm, confident and connected to both their children and the parents they want to be, regardless of the struggles.

When Bryn is not working, she is writing, meditating, embarrassing herself in a hip-hop dance class and trying (largely unsuccessfully) to keep up with her own two small children.

Bryn Miller Parent Coaching, www.brynmillercoaching.com, is an online resource built to support parents of teens and young adults struggling with mental health issues.

Bryn has used her decade of expertise in working with families (along with lessons from her own parenting struggles) to develop a signature 5-step framework, The Response Roadmap, that helps parents get calm, confident and connected to their loved ones and the parents they want to be.

Parents can access these actionable tools in 3 ways: The on-demand Course, the quarterly 8-week intimate Course + Cohort or private coaching sessions.
